What We Do

RAS purchases antique stone in developing countries, where it is being lost to rapid industrialization, urban renewal, or to displacement due to large public works such as the Three Gorges Dam Project. Although the use of antique stone is a defining characteristic of RAS, we also offer a complementary set of products in newly quarried stone from original source quarries, allowing the seamless blending of old and new materials. We take pride in preserving the human history of stone impacted by years of foot traffic or ox carts. Subtle factors of weathering and wear give stone a unique patina impossible to duplicate with any mechanical process. Our staff assists in the proper application of antique materials to the greatest effect. In addition, our experts advise customers how antique and new stone work together.

The combination of antique and new stone lends versatility to many applications and allows our materials to fulfill the vision of our customers. RAS products include veneers and quoins, retaining walls, pavements, and stairs. Our proprietary product systems allow our materials to be pre-crafted and organized into patterns for installation by standard construction crews. These processes save money. Some of our other architectural and artistic products are lintels, sills, arched assemblies, columns, one-piece tubs and sinks, stone furniture, and custom fireplaces. Because our factories employ fifteenth-century techniques and tooling, the size, tolerance, and the seven hand finishes of RAS stone are unique. Using handcrafted stone means we can make products sized appropriately to the scale of large structures, products that are not restricted by the limitations of machine production.
